Six-court tennis bubble, pickleball facility coming to West Vancouver

staff report
April 5, 2023 7:21am

District of West Vancouver and Tennis BC are working together to create an indoor tennis and pickleball facility at Hugo Ray Park.

At the council meeting on April 3, Tennis BC president, Rick Hasting announced that they are signing a MOU with West Vancouver to create a 6-court tennis bubble and a 6-court indoor pickleball facility at Hugo Ray Park.

“Since we have the same management system, we have the expertise to offer maintenance and staffing for the facility. We are really excited about this and it’s going to be a very special project,” Hastings said.

Mayor Mark Sager said West Vancouver is thrilled to be having a facility that will be a training ground for young athletes, adding that 85 per cent of court time will be available to public. The tennis court will be building on unused property on the southeast corner of Hugo Park. “This is a perfect location, and it will be a great amenity to the community and the neighbourhood,” he said.

The North Shore Tennis Society welcomed the announcement by Mayor Mark Sager. In a press statement, the society said they have been advocating for the District of West Vancouver to improve public tennis facilities, including the creation of an indoor tennis facility.

“This is great day for tennis in West Vancouver. We are very pleased that our advocacy efforts have borne fruit with the announcement of this new Tennis Centre in Hugo Ray Park. On behalf of all our members, we thank everyone involved, in particular Mayor Sager, the West Vancouver Council and our colleagues at Tennis B.C. We also thank all levels of government whose financial contributions will make this happen,” said Duncan Brown, President of the North Shore Tennis Society.

Marcus Shapiro, the Vice President of the Tennis Society and Chair of its West Vancouver Committee, said: “Having worked closely with the West Vancouver Picklers, we are delighted that Tennis B.C.’s plans encompass new pickleball courts as well as new indoor tennis courts. I join Duncan in thanking the Mayor, Council and Staff at District of West Vancouver and Tennis BC. We look forward to this plan becoming a reality in the near future.”

Why not ask Tennis BC if they can include Padel, either in this development or as part of a future expansion?
