SPCA seizes dog strapped to RV crate on Highway 1 during heat wave

A dog who was spotted in a crate strapped to the back of an RV driving along Highway 1 during a record heat wave on June 28 has been seized by BC SPCA animal protection officers.

The owner was driving from the Fraser Valley to the Okanagan.

The SPCA took the German Shephard into custody on June 30 and is caring for him at an undisclosed location.

The German shepherd is now safe and receiving “lots of love and attention from SPCA staff.”

“We will be recommending charges of animal cruelty when we submit the file to Crown counsel for their decision,” says Lorie Chortyk, general manager of communications for the BC SPCA.

“We were able to act quickly to locate the dog and to apply for a warrant to seize him.”

“We deal with hundreds of calls each summer to rescue pets in distress in hot vehicles, but this situation was definitely a first for us,” she says.

The dog is not available for adoption at this time, as the SPCA has to follow the legal steps in the process before he can be brought home.

“We are truly grateful to everyone who reached out to help this poor dog.”

The individual should have lost his RV too, he had a truck, and a very large RV, there is no excuse for such inhumane act, of animal cruelty. I would like to see a major penalty, and a lifetime ban on owning a dog, for they do not care enough about their welfare, only theirs.
I would like to propose a ban on dog owners putting their dogs in the back of an open pick up box, and transporting them this way, an accident would certainly injure, or heaven forbid worse.
They give us Unconditional love, and loyalty and should be respected and treated the same

I really don’t see the big deal. He obviously wasn’t too hot…. That was probably the coolest place for him. But then again too many uneducated people in power

Apparently you’d be ok breathing the exhaust, in 40C heat with no water. There would be no breeze, it’d be blocked by the vehicle. The heat from the pavement would be horrendous.
Please let your family know this is your preferred method of transportation

Are you kidding me. The owners are sitting in an air-conditioned truck. This dog is in serious jeopardy with the high temps, heat off the highway and danger of being rear ended

Absurd, no animal belongs behind a vehicle in a crate at any time under any circumstance. What is the matter with you?

How about you stick yourself in this crate and have 3 layers of clothing on. See how you like to breathe in exhaust fumes for the length of the trip. Make sure the temp outside is 50Celcius,You are a dumb fuck

Gosh I really hope you don’t own a dog!! What part of 40+ degree weather, sun beating down on the pavement and hot exhaust coming from the vehicle makes you think it would have been the coolest place for him?? There is no cool air while driving when the air is at that temperature, not to also mention that those plastic crates even with the openings heat up like a sauna in hot weather. There is NOTHING cool about any of that. Common sense says inside the vehicle with the air conditioning going would have been so much cooler. If you had any idea how a dog cools down you would know better… uneducated hhmm if the shoe fits.

The next time it is that hot have someone put you in a crate behind an rv for the same duration of time. And come back and see if you feel the same way.
