It appears as though speed may have been a contributing factor in a single vehicle collision that claimed the life of a 17-year-old driver and sent a 19-year-old female passenger to hospital, according to West Van police.
The collision happened on January 11, 2020 shortly after 4 am in the 6300 blk of Marine Dr.
WVPD officers arrived on scene and located the vehicle, a 2002 BMW sedan, at rest against a hydro pole. The vehicle had sustained extensive damage.
The driver, a 17-year-old boy from North Vancouver, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The lone passenger, a 19-year-old female from North Vancouver, was located at the scene and was being cared for by witnesses. She was later transported to hospital by ambulance with non-life-threatening injuries.
Early indications suggested that speed was likely a factor that led to the collision. Road conditions at the time were wet, and it was raining.
Investigators from the Lower Mainland Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service (ICARS) were called out and traffic was shut down for part of the day as they conducted their investigation.
A final determination as to causal factors will not be available until the ICARS investigation has been completed.
“All of us here at West Vancouver Police offer our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased boy,” says Cst. Kevin Goodmurphy. “The loss of a young person is especially devastating to a community.”
Anyone who may have witnessed the incident or factors leading up to it, are asked to contact West Vancouver Police and reference file #20-386.
