Surrey man arrested for impaired driving in Highway 1 crash

Staff report
January 8, 2021 10:08am

A Surrey resident has been arrested for impaired driving in Highway 1 crash.

The driver, a 47-year-old resident of Surrey, has been arrested for Driving While Impaired and Driving While Prohibited.

The investigation is ongoing.

Meanwhile, the driver of the semi that crashed near the Fern Street overpass was not seriously injured in the accident, says North Vancouver RCMP.

Highway 1 Westbound is open over the Second Narrows Bridge, and traffic can cross the bridge, but must exit at Dollarton or Main St. exits.

The traffic backup, however, extends all the way to Burnaby.

Due to concerns about the structural integrity of the overpass, the Westbound lanes of Hwy 1 were temporarily closed to traffic, which caused significant traffic delays for morning commuters.

Engineers subsequently deemed the overpass to be structurally safe, and the crash was cleared.

However a fuel spill from the crash left the roadway very slick and dangerous.

A significant amount of absorbant sand product was required, and had to be called to the scene, causing further delays.

The accident happened this morning at the bottom of the cut, by the Fern St. overpass, around 4 am.

Is it the new Fern street overpass or the old one?

Neither… It’s the Dollarton overpass next to the bus loop….

And I bet they washed all of the fuel into the ditch.
