Suspicious fire in West Vancouver sends man to hospital

Staff report
December 4, 2020 5:28pm

A suspicious fire in West Vancouver has sent one man to hospital and damaged a home in the 300 block of Kawtin Road.

On December 4, at 5:30 am, officers were called to the home by a resident who was reporting a disturbance. When the first officer arrived, she encountered a resident on the front lawn who said a fire had started inside.

Fearing that there may be more people in danger, the officer entered the home and discovered smoke and signs of a large fire.

She quickly backed out.

Other officers attended and located an injured man lying in the back yard. As the fire flared, officers were forced to breach a neighbor’s fence in order to get the injured man to a safe place.

West Vancouver Fire & Rescue Services attended soon after and were able to control the fire which was contained to the one home.

The fire was eventually extinguishes, although neighbouring houses did sustain damage.

The injured man was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

“Our officers worked quickly and bravely, given the circumstances,” says Cst. Kevin Goodmurphy. “They knew this man needed to be brought to safety as the fire grew larger.”

The cause of the fire is still under investigation and is considered suspicious at this time.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact the WVPD Major Investigations Team at 604-925-7300.
