UPDATE: North Vancouver RCMP is thanking the public for their assistance in identifying a suspect in an assault on skateboarder.

Police said a number of people came forward with information, including the suspect himself, said Sgt. Peter DeVries.  However, the suspect’s name was not released by North Van RCMP. “We want to thank both the public and the individual involved for doing the right thing by contacting us.”

North Vancouver RCMP are seeking public assistance to identify a suspect in an assault that occurred on W Esplanade on July 18, 2022, just after 5 pm.

Police say one person was riding a skateboard when he was accosted by a man who had been walking on the sidewalk.

The suspect, who is described as older, having white hair, and wearing glasses, claimed the skateboarder had almost struck him when riding past, and appeared upset about this.

During the ensuing exchange, the man is alleged to have assaulted the skateboarder.

The suspect is described as:

An older lighter skinned man

Approximately 6 feet tall

Wore glasses

Shoulder length grey hair and a long grey moustache

In an effort to further the investigation, RCMP are releasing photos of the suspect.

Anyone who believes they know the pictured person’s identity is asked to contact North Vancouver RCMP at (604) 985-1311 and quote file number 2022-17736.

“We also are encouraging the person who was involved in the incident to identify himself,” said Corporal Melissa Jongema.

Any assault is not justified. Provocation (not fully mentioned in the article) is well known to provide a partial defense.

For information it should be noted that:
Motorized skateboards cannot be operated on roads, or on sidewalks beside them, in B.C.
B.C.’s Motor Vehicle Act defines these vehicle types as motor vehicles, but they do not meet provincial equipment safety standards for on-road use. Motorized skateboards may only be operated where the Motor Vehicle Act doesn’t apply, such as

on private property that does not have public vehicle access, and
on trails or pathways (if allowed by municipal bylaw).

As you age, you will become wiser. The fear of being hit by a skateboard is real as a broken anything when you are older is life changing. A little respect in your comment might be helpful.
