Vancouver city councillors pass motion for safer streets

Staff report
May 29, 2024 3:44pm

Vancouver City Council has passed a new motion to improve road safety measures across the city significantly. The initiative, led by Councillors Lisa Dominato and Lenny Zhou, underscored the urgent need to implement robust pedestrian safety mechanisms.

The newly approved motion allocates additional funds and resources to expedite the installation of critical pedestrian safety infrastructure. This includes pedestrian-controlled signals, leading pedestrian interval crossings (LPIs), rapid flashing beacons, and zebra markings.

“We want to accelerate the implementation of these crucial safety measures, particularly around schools and parks,” said Councillor Dominato. “We owe it to our community to create safer environments for pedestrians of all ages.”

By reallocating funds from the 2023-2026 Capital Plan, the city aims to enhance road safety in 2024 significantly. Councillor Zhou highlighted the initiative’s importance, saying, “Every life lost on our streets is one too many. This motion will take us one step further towards our goal of having no traffic-related fatalities and serious injuries.”

This initiative underscores City Council’s dedication to pedestrian safety and aligns with Vancouver’s Transportation 2040 Plan, ensuring residents can cross streets with confidence and peace of mind.
