Vancouver Police Department is investigating a homicide that resulted from a serious assault in Oppenheimer Park on January 1.
Just before 1 p.m., on New Year’s day, VPD responded to Oppenheimer Park where a man had been assaulted near the basketball court in the northeast corner of the park.
Jesus Cristobal-Esteban, 62, was taken to hospital by paramedics, where he fell unconscious. He died as a result of his injuries on January 2.
The identity of the suspect is not known at this time. However, police believe the victim and suspect had some sort of interaction prior to the assault.

This is Vancouver’s first homicide of 2020.
