The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre is warning the public about COVID-19 related scams.
One such scam being reported in other countries is private companies offering fast COVID-19 tests for sale.
The public is being reminded that only hospitals can perform the test, and that no other tests are genuine or guaranteed to provide accurate results.
Another warning related to those who may buy items related to COVID-19. Police warn that these products may be expired, of lower quality and dangerous to your health.
The Federal Trade Commission and Food and Drug Administration in the United States have warned of companies selling fraudulent products that claim to treat or prevent the disease
The United States has not approved any such products.
Other such scams that could surface include fraudsters posing as police officers and imposing fines, and scamsters urging people to invest in hot new stocks related to the disease.
The public is also being warned about phishing, spear phishing and other malicious email campaigns that capitalize on the public’s fears about COVID-19.
Police warn that fraudsters are also creating fraudulent and deceptive online ads that offer cleaning products, hand sanitizers, and other items in demand.
Police is also issuing caution to not feel pressurized to make a donation, and to first verify that a charity is registered. Be aware of people selling miracle remedies.
