West Van locals return from vacation to find home ransacked

Staff report
December 11, 2024 12:33pm

West Vancouver Police have responded to break-ins in various residential areas, ranging from forced entries into private homes to thefts from multi-unit parking facilities.

According to crime briefs from December 6 to 10, residents in the Stevens Drive Area returned home from vacation to discover their property had been broken into. Entry was forced through a second-floor window, but the home alarm system did not activate.

In a separate incident in the Cypress Bowl Road Area, a similar break-in was attempted through a second-floor balcony door. Unlike the Stevens Drive case, the residential alarm was triggered, prompting a swift police response. However, the suspect fled the scene before officers arrived. Another concerning case occurred in the Ambleside Area, where a gated parking area in a multi-unit residential building was breached. Thieves targeted EV charging equipment, making off with valuable items.

Theft from vehicles, retail

In the Marine Drive/Taylor Way Area, thieves smashed the rear window of a parked vehicle in a retail lot, seizing high-value gift items from the back seat. The Memorial Park Area also saw two incidents of theft from autos. In one case, a vehicle left unlocked overnight was ransacked, resulting in the theft of insurance papers and personal belongings. In the other, forced entry was used to access a car, but the stolen items were of limited cash value.

The Taylor Way/Marine Drive Area has experienced an increase in shoplifting cases, with 15 reports filed since the last update. Two incidents involved thefts exceeding $5,000.

Dundarave resident falls prey to scam

A resident in the Dundarave Area fell victim to an elaborate scam when a caller posed as a representative of their personal bank. Claiming that the victim’s accounts and home internet system had been hacked, the suspect instructed the resident to send their bank cards and PIN codes for “analysis.” A courier was dispatched to collect the items, and unauthorized withdrawals were made before the resident realized they had been duped.
