West Van police to increase foot patrols in community

STAFF REPORT
July 7, 2020 12:41pm

Visitors to West Vancouver’s scenic parks and beaces will notice an increase in uniformed police officers this summer.

In anticipation of larger than normal crowds due to COVID-19 and the encouragement of BC tourism officials to stay close to home this Summer, West Vancouver Police says it will increase foot patrols and deploy teams of officers to help ensure visitors are enjoying the outdoor spaces safely.

“We live in one of the most beautiful places on earth, and we want people to enjoy our parks,” says Cst. Kevin Goodmurphy. “With an increase in foot patrols, officers may be better positioned to deal with problems or to assist the public when needed.”

While the officers’ main objective will be to ensure the lawful enjoyment of outdoor spaces, the increase in foot patrol may include enforcing the Liquor Control and Licensing Act, Cannabis Control and Licensing Act, various municipal by-laws, Motor Vehicle Act, etc.

“What we really want is for people to know that we are here if they need us, and that we may actually be closer than they think,” says Goodmurphy.

The West Vancouver Police Department encourages anyone who witnesses unlawful behaviour in parks and beaches to report it through the non-emergency reporting line 604-925-7300, or in the case of an emergency, to call 9-1-1.
