Starting in June, West Vancouver bylaw officers will hand out dog treats during proactive park patrols to reward responsible dog owners, District of West Vancouver said in a press release. To be eligible for a free dog treat, dog owners must be West Vancouver residents and have an active dog licence and dog licence tag displayed.
They must also have their dog on a leash in a dog-permitted area and carry dog poop bags.
The dog treats are handmade in Burnaby by Big Dog Little Dog Bakery and are wheat-free, meat-free, and preservative-free. They contain oat flour, rolled oats, cheddar and parmesan cheese, olive oil, and honey. A limited number of “golden biscuits” dipped in yellow yogurt and edible glitter will be handed out randomly.
Dog owners who receive a golden biscuit will also receive a free 2026 dog licence. Free dog treats will be handed out throughout the summer, the press release noted. “Responsible dog owners who follow the Animal Control and Licence Bylaw help to ensure that everyone can enjoy West Vancouver’s parks, trails, and other shared public spaces,” the press release said.
The District also reminds people that a dog older than six months needs a West Vancouver dog licence and must wear the associated tag. This allows officers to quickly identify your dog in case of an emergency and help work towards a happy reunion as soon as possible. Dogs are not permitted on beaches, playgrounds, school or sports fields.
Unbelievable. Don’t staff and council in West Vancouver have better things to do than come up with ridiculous bylaws like this? Embarrassing.
