West Vancouver Council has approved a series of traffic calming and pedestrian safety measures for Glenmore Drive, following a staff report presented at a recent council meeting.
The improvements will include two new 1.8-metre-wide gravel pathways — one on the south side of Morven Drive and another on the east side of Glenmore Drive — as well as raised crosswalks at the intersections of Glenmore Drive and Morven Drive, and the Baden-Powell Trail crossing. Rapid flashing beacons will be installed at both crosswalks to alert drivers to pedestrian activity.
White edge lines will be painted on Glenmore Drive to define the roadway and create 3.3-metre-wide travel lanes between Morven Drive and the Baden-Powell Trail. Parking on the east side of Glenmore Drive will be prohibited to protect the new pathway and maintain pedestrian access. Funding for the project will come from a Community Amenity Contribution associated with a development at 14 Glenmore Drive.
Traffic studies presented to the council indicated low vehicle volumes outside school pick-up and drop-off times, with less than five per cent of vehicles exceeding the posted speed limit. Staff recommended against reducing the speed limit, citing the residential nature of the roadway and consistent driving speeds between 30 and 50 kilometres per hour.
According to staff, the newly raised crosswalks and flashing beacons are intended to slow traffic and improve pedestrian safety, particularly near school zones and trail crossings with limited visibility. Council directed staff to proceed with the recommended upgrades.
