West Vancouver police report that thefts from vehicles are increasing at popular parks and trailheads, and are urging drivers to tighten their security to avoid becoming targets.
In a public advisory issued Thursday, the department said officers are working to curb the spike and catch the thieves but asked residents and visitors to do their part by locking every door and window, including sunroofs, installing alarms or steering-wheel locks, and clearing vehicles of all valuables before walking away.
Even small items, such as sunglasses, dashcams, phone chargers, and coins, can tempt thieves, police noted. They also warned that a stolen garage-door opener paired with insurance papers can give criminals both a home address and a way inside. Anyone who discovers their vehicle has been broken into is asked to file an online report through the West Vancouver Police website. People who spot suspicious activity or a crime in progress should call 911, the department said.
