North Vancouver MP Jonathan Wilkinson has announced nearly $5 million in federal funding to repair and retrofit 35 affordable homes in North Vancouver.
In a press release issued March 30, 2026, the Government of Canada said it’s investing in upgrading the Ocean View Apartments at 165 West 6th Street, managed by Hiy̓ám̓ ta Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Housing Society. Wilkinson made the announcement on behalf of federal Housing Minister Gregor Robertson.

Planned upgrades include tightening the building envelope, replacing insulation, windows, and patio doors, and installing heat pumps, Energy Recovery Ventilators, low-flow water fixtures, and LED lighting.
According to the press release, the project draws from several funding sources: nearly $5 million from Ottawa, $280,000 from the Federation of Canadian Municipalities, $145,000 from VanCity, $88,000 from CleanBC, and $9.4 million from the B.C. Rental Protection Fund, which backed the building’s acquisition by Hiy̓ám̓ ta Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Housing Society in 2024.
“This project will extend the life of Ocean View Apartments and make these 35 homes more sustainable, affordable, and comfortable,” Wilkinson said.
Sarah Silva, CEO of Hiy̓ám̓ ta Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Housing Society, called access to affordable housing on Squamish traditional territory a pressing need. FCM President Rebecca Bligh said the project demonstrates that housing affordability and climate action are “deeply connected” rather than competing goals.
The press release noted the broader Canada Greener Affordable Housing Fund was a $1.2-billion national program to help community housing providers complete deep energy retrofits. Its application portal is now closed, with all funding committed.
The announcement falls under the federal government’s Build Canada Homes initiative, which is working with provinces, municipalities, and Indigenous communities to accelerate affordable housing construction across the country.
