A collision in downtown Vancouver on Sunday, January 19 has claimed the life of a woman and left her husband in hospital with serious injuries.
Vancouver Police are continuing to investigate.
At around 5:20 p.m., a Vancouver woman and her husband, both in their 70s, were walking in a marked crosswalk at Pacific Street and Richards Street when they were struck by a delivery van, as it made a left turn onto Pacific Street.
The driver of the van, a 37-year-old man from Surrey, remained at the scene and is cooperating with police.
The VPD’s Collision Investigation Unit is gathering evidence and speaking with witnesses. Anyone with dash-cam footage who was driving in the area at the time of the collision, or anyone who may have witnessed the collision, is asked to call investigators at 604-717-3012.
This is the first pedestrian fatality in Vancouver in 2020.
This is getting to be a frequent occurrence in Metro Vancouver. It’s especially disturbing that the majority of people being hit and injured or killed by motor vehicles are being struck while they are in highly visible crosswalks with functional safety equipment.
“Left her husband male in hospital”?
This is tragic. Vancouver city mayor should create a campaign for all people to wear some form of reflective clothing, reflective bands, something so that they can be seen at night. I see many people wearing them when they are walking their dogs, and even the dogs have some form of reflective or light accessories on them. All it takes is for the mayor to encourage people to do this one simple thing. I have an umbrella that lights up so on a dark and rainy night I am visible for all to see. This all could be avoided with a simple addition of something that reflects or a light of sort. It’s all available. My heart goes out to these poor people that were struck in the middle of a crosswalk.
