WVPD to support youths unable to cope with COVID-19 stress

April 17, 2020 11:04am

Do you know of a young person in West Vancouver who may be suffering in silence during these difficult times? Youth Liaison Officers from our Community Services Team (CST) may be able to help.

The mandate of the WVPD Community Services Team is to build and maintain positive relationships with the community. This includes working directly with young people to provide guidance and support, in their roles as youth liaison officers.

During these difficult times due to COVID-19, some young people may be having difficulties coping with the stress of being in some form of isolation, away from their friends, or perhaps they just don’t feel safe at home.

Officers from CST often work in partnership with the District of West Vancouver’s Youth Outreach Workers to help identify and support the more vulnerable young people in our community. This may include helping to direct the young person to a more appropriate community resource, or even delivering healthy meals to those who need it most.

“For some young people, school is a place of refuge,” says Cst. Kevin Goodmurphy. “Now that our young people are temporarily out of a school routine, many may be having difficulties processing certain emotions.” “Or perhaps they just want to talk.”

To reach out to the Community Services Team, please contact Cst. Braithwaite at 604-925-7300 or email nicolebraithwaite@wvpd.ca

If you feel that a young person is in immediate danger, call 9-1-1.
