Young students dead in head-on collision on Highway 99: West Van police

Staff report
July 4, 2024 10:03am

West Vancouver Police Department has confirmed details regarding a tragic collision on Highway 99 that occurred on June 27 at approximately 11:40 pm.

The westbound vehicle was occupied by four young men, all Indian nationals on temporary student visas. Tragically, a 20-year-old male and a 21-year-old male lost their lives in the collision. A 19-year-old male and a 20-year-old male sustained serious injuries and were transported to the hospital. The families of the deceased and injured have been notified, and their names will not be released out of respect for their privacy, police said.

The eastbound vehicle, travelling in the wrong direction on the westbound lanes near Westport Road, was occupied by a 26-year-old female, a foreign national.

“This is truly every parent’s worst nightmare,” said a spokesperson for the West Vancouver Police Department. “We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of those who lost their lives or were injured in this tragic incident.”

The investigation into the collision is ongoing.

Would we, perhaps, need more rigorous driver training? If these were all foreign drivers (perhaps with foreign DL’s?), there needs to be a requirement to test all drivers holding these licenses, and explain the rules of the road in BC.

    More questions need answers:

How does a driver get into the wrong lane? How fast were they all travelling? What happened to the driver who was in the wrong lane? Was she hurt?

The junction at the top of Gleneagles is confusing in the daylight. I think better signage and lighting on some of the on+ off ramps around HSB and Caulfield would help enormously
