West Vancouver police issued 205 violation tickets over the August long weekend during a joint traffic enforcement effort with B.C. Highway Patrol along the corridor between West Vancouver and Whistler.
Of those tickets, 63 were for excessive speed, according to the West Vancouver Police Department. Officers also issued two immediate roadside prohibitions for drug or alcohol impairment, arrested one prohibited driver, and issued one Notice and Order for a non-compliant vehicle during the three-day operation.
The enforcement ran from Saturday, Aug. 1 to Monday, Aug. 3, with officers focusing on high-risk driving.
In one case, a West Vancouver officer stopped a sedan carrying four industrial-sized containers of vegetable oil strapped to its roof. Police said the occupants had been trying to travel to the B.C. Interior with the improperly secured and overweight load. The vehicle was taken off the road and the driver was issued a Notice and Order for non-compliance.
“Drivers have a legal obligation under the Motor Vehicle Act to ensure that their vehicles do not exceed Gross Vehicle Weight maximums, that the roof can safely support the load, and that their cargo is safely secured,” said Sgt. Stephen France. “Failure to do so can have serious safety implications for all road users.”
The department said its Summer Safety Initiative will continue through August. Police reminded drivers to follow posted speed limits, stay sober, and ensure their vehicles and cargo meet safety regulations.
Just think if we had modern technology on the road. No need for one policeman to have a radar gun. He or she could be on other things. Why are we not adopting different methods?
