North Shore officers issued 44 tickets in just two hours during a targeted distracted-driving enforcement operation conducted on March 4, with the majority of violations involving drivers caught using an electronic device while driving.

In a social media post, North Vancouver RCMP announced it joined forces with West Vancouver Police, Transit Police BC, and ICBC to conduct the joint operation in support of Distracted Driving Awareness Month. Officers were stationed at Capilano Road and Marine Drive, as well as at additional locations across West Vancouver.

Of the 44 tickets issued, 36 were handed to drivers caught using an electronic device while driving — accounting for more than 80 per cent of all violations recorded during the blitz, according to the post in X.

Community policing volunteers were also present at the scene. The post noted that volunteers played a supportive role in the operation and engaged directly with members of the public throughout the enforcement period.

According to North Vancouver RCMP, the initiative serves as an important reminder for drivers to keep their full attention on the road, underscoring the ongoing risks that distracted driving continues to pose to North Shore communities.

Now let’s tackle stop sign runners.
A long time ago, drivers would press the brake pedal and stop at stop signs. It evolved to tap the brakes, but don’t come to a complete stop. This is the “rolling stop”, the ultimate oxymoron.
Lately I have seen drivers blow through stop signs without even slowing down. I live near Caulfield elementary school in West Vancouver. It’s particularly horrible at school drop off and pick up times. The drivers are mainly from other neighborhoods.
I wrote a letter to Mark Sager, he was very empathetic and promised action. I’m not sure what would work. There’s probably thousands of stop sign controlled intersections on the North Shore.
But then, I don’t get paid to figure it out.

What about stopping all the drivers using the bus lanes on Marine Drive – both East and West of Taylor Way?
