Andrew Chu, an education assistant with the North Vancouver School District, has died in a mountain biking accident on trails near Cypress Provincial Park in West Vancouver.

The incident occurred on Saturday afternoon, April 6. Emergency responders were called to the area after reports of a mountain biker colliding with a tree and suffering a cardiac arrest. West Vancouver Fire & Rescue and North Shore Rescue responded to the incident, but despite their efforts, Andrew Chu’s life could not be saved.

Mike Danks, team leader of North Shore Rescue, said they engaged their advanced medical group and could extract the patient for transportation to the hospital.

“We had an advanced medical group that went in and did insertion and helicopter extraction for that patient. The patient was extracted by hoist and airlifted over to the harbour in Vancouver to be transported to Vancouver General Hospital,” said Mike Danks, team leader of North Shore Rescue.

Medical personnel tried to resuscitate Chu, but despite their best efforts, he succumbed to his injuries. Andrew Chu’s death is being mourned by his colleagues in the North Vancouver School District, who remember him for his dedication as an educational assistant.

“It is with a heavy heart I inform you of the tragic passing of one of our NVSD colleagues, Andrew Chu. Andrew had worked as an educational assistant for several years, most recently at Windsor Secondary and Norgate Elementary School,” it read. “Andrew passed away suddenly and unexpectedly on Saturday after a terrible mountain biking accident, and our hearts and deepest sympathy go out to his family and friends,” District superintendent Piu Ryan said in a message to his colleagues.
