Swim Drink Fish and the City of North Vancouver have announced plans for an innovative swimming structure at Waterfront Park in Burrard Inlet, the first of its kind in British Columbia.

The planned structure will feature generous, protected swimming areas, including an accessible shallow pool, 50-metre swim lanes, and diving platforms, along with lounging and seating areas throughout.

The harbour deck is being made possible through a $16 million donation to Swim Drink Fish from the Weston family, and an additional $5 million in capital funding from the City of North Vancouver.

“The addition of the City’s first outdoor seawater swimming amenity exemplifies Council’s commitment to building a more vibrant community while proudly celebrating our connection to the marine environment. It marks an exciting step toward becoming the Healthiest Small City in the World,” said Mayor Buchanan.

The design is in the early conceptual phases to test for feasibility. The City of North Vancouver will lead intergovernmental discussions and community engagement throughout the design process. This flagship project is being announced alongside the launch of the WAVE Prize – a new Swim Drink Fish-led initiative to increase public access to urban swimmable waters in B.C.

Healthiest Small City? The “poorest” Small City when taxpayers are already taxed to the max and frivolous projects like this pop up. We’re already going to be paying for years on the new Harry Jerome, and don’t forget the boondoggle by Metro Vancouver leaving us paying for the waste water treatment plant!

I like this idea, swimming is a sport all ages from babies to 90 year olds plus can engage in. Had you built. 50 metre pool in the new Harry Jerome Centre we would not be doing this we would be building something else no doubt!

The $5 million will be funded by the new parking meter levies right?
