The City of North Vancouver will conduct vapour and smoke testing in several east side neighbourhoods on October 15 and 16 to identify potential leaks in the sanitary sewer system, according to a City news release.

Harvest Project

The testing will help detect cracks, leaks, and faulty connections that may allow rainwater to enter the sewer network. The sanitary sewer system is designed to handle wastewater only, and excess rainwater can cause collection system issues, the City said.

Testing will take place in the following areas:

  • 200–300 blocks East 8th Street and East Keith Road
  • 200–400 block East 9th Street
  • 300–500 blocks East 10th, 11th, 12th, and 13th streets
  • 1100 block Ridgeway Avenue
  • 1100–1200 block West Grand Boulevard
  • 1100–1300 block Moody Avenue

During the test, crews will inject harmless, odourless smoke into the sewer system and observe where it escapes. Residents may see smoke coming from manhole covers, rooftop vents, or outdoor drains.

The City emphasized that the smoke is non-toxic, non-staining, and safe for people, pets, and plants. Residents are advised not to be alarmed if they notice smoke during the two-day testing period.
