New improvements are underway in Central Lonsdale as part of the City of North Vancouver’s Lonsdale Great Street Plan, according to the news release.
The plan follows Council approval on April 20, 2026, and sets out a 20-year vision to strengthen and revitalize Central Lonsdale as a neighbourhood main street. The plan is designed to protect the area’s local businesses, active sidewalks and diverse community while planning for future growth.

“The Lonsdale Great Street Project is about more than revitalizing a beloved street; it is about shaping the heart of our city for the long term,” said Mayor Linda Buchanan. “Central Lonsdale has long been a strong, local-serving commercial area. It is home to small businesses, essential services, and thousands of residents. This plan lays out a thoughtful path forward—one that strengthens economic vitality, improves livability, and creates a place where people don’t just pass through, but choose to spend time and build community.”
Buchanan said the first improvements are part of a comprehensive long-term plan to build a more welcoming, safe, and vibrant street.
The first phase of projects is now underway, with improvements to public spaces expected to be completed by the end of this year, according to the news release. The initiatives include adding more attractive and accessible street furniture, painting light poles, re-wrapping recycling and garbage bins, and enhancing landscaping in planting beds, rain gardens, tree pits and parklets.
Other elements of the first phase include expanding the footprint and duration of seasonal lighting along Central Lonsdale beginning in September, installing street banners such as those for the Remembrance Day Parade, and restoring utility-impacted sidewalk sections by replacing temporary asphalt patches with permanent concrete.
While the early efforts focus largely on visual improvements, the plan establishes a long-term framework to help local businesses flourish, attract new commercial activity and support a vibrant neighbourhood main street for residents, businesses and visitors alike, according to the news release.

No more “parklets”! The present ones are under utilized. Who wants to sit next to a bunch of cars driving by? And don’t get me wrong, I AGREE with cars on Lonsdale. It was designed to be a thorough fare. The added (new) pedestrian controlled cross walks on St. George are proof that council knows the traffic will just shunt there.
I think you’re wasting all our hard earned Money ! Lonsdale has become such a dangerous street to park on , cars come too close to cars parked . The traffic doesn’t flow . No more parklits ,barely used . Our winters are longer than our summers. The city can’t keep up with the maintenance now and now you want to add more . Who’s pruning the trees who’s watering the shrubs . No one .
