City of North Vancouver Mayor Linda Buchanan has released the following statement in recognition of Ukraine Independence Day 2022 on August 24:
“Today marks the first Ukraine Independence Day since the unprovoked, full-scale military invasion of Ukraine by Russia. The Ukrainian diaspora has been deeply effected by the events of the past 6 months, including many Ukrainian-Canadians within our community.
“This war has been devastating for people in Ukraine. Millions have been displaced, families have been separated, and many have lost a loved one. Today my heart is with those who have been impacted directly by this unjustified war.
“As people are forced out of their homes in Ukraine, I hope that the City can be a place of refuge. I am moved by the resilience that the Ukrainian people who have settled in the City have demonstrated as they have grappled with an unimaginable situation.
“Today we raised the Ukrainian flag in Civic Plaza in solidarity. The City is committed to being a welcoming place for all people. I hope that by this time next year we will see peace in Europe and justice for those who have experienced such immense loss.
“Thank you to the members of our community who have opened up their hearts. I have heard many stories of residents who have raised funds, offered a spare bedroom, and helped families navigate life in a new country. Your generosity embodies who we are as a community and I am so grateful to all of you for advancing us as a caring city for all people.”
