Parents at Cove Cliff Elementary School in Deep Cove have launched a petition against reinstating a librarian who will return on February 24 after a one-month suspension. The suspension followed an investigation into allegations of inappropriate behaviour by Tariq Mahmood Malik with female students and sexually suggestive social media content.
According to the ruling by the B.C. Commissioner for Teacher Regulation Malik had violated the district’s code of conduct. However, it determined that a one-month suspension was an appropriate disciplinary action, allowing for his eventual return to the school. The concerned parents say a new librarian would offer a necessary fresh start for the school community. They are calling on the North Vancouver Teachers Association and the North Vancouver School District to take action to ensure student safety across all districts.
“Given the findings in the consent resolution document and the potential risk to students, we must urge the North Vancouver Teachers Association and the North Vancouver School District to take immediate and decisive action.”
They also expressed concern about the message it would send to students who reported the alleged misconduct. “Their words matter; they told a trusted adult, and now the people that are supposed to keep them safe are allowing him back,” the petition reads.
The parents are urging all members of the community to support their initiative by signing the petition and contacting Dr. Pius Ryan, Superintendent of Schools, via email at superintendent@sd44.ca.
