District of North Vancouver Council will consider a $15,000 contribution toward a playground replacement at Sherwood Park Elementary School in Deep Cove.

The item is on the agenda for the May 25 council meeting, set to begin at 7 p.m. Staff will be recommending a $15,000 contribution from the council’s operating contingency fund toward the renewal of the school’s aging playground at 4085 Dollar Road.

The school serves more than 370 students, along with on-site childcare and afterschool programs, and draws from the Tsleil-Waututh Nation, the growing Ravenwoods neighbourhood, and French Immersion families.

The community has been fundraising for years. The school’s Parent Advisory Council has raised $120,000, and School District 44 has committed $205,000. Grants, donations, and in-kind contributions from organizations including the DNV Firefighters Charity, Kal Tire, and the Mount Seymour Lions Club bring total secured funding to $428,500. The proposed playground would be fully accessible, with seating incorporated for community use after school hours.

Council is also being asked to direct staff to review the policy governing such grants. According to the report, the Playground Development on School Grounds Policy has not been updated since 2001 and carries no dedicated budget. Options could include creating a formal annual funding program, raising grant amounts, or scrapping the policy entirely.
