The existing Harry Jerome centre and Memorial Recreation Centre will close at the end of 2021 as CNV moves ahead with the next phase of development on site.
Construction on the new Harry Jerome centre will begin in 2022, and it is expected to be ready by 2025.
The design of the new centre will be presented to council this April.
In a media release, CNV said the new Harry Jerome centre will include many amenities such as an arena, an aquatics centre with a 26.5 metre 10 lane pool, a large leisure pool, fitness and preschool space, and a gym.
Youth and arts spaces, an outdoor area with a skate park, play areas and an outdoor multisport court will also be part of the new centre.
A new facility for Silver Harbour Seniors Activity Centre is also planned for the site.
“This is a great day for people in our City,” says Mayor Linda Buchanan.
“Through location, amenities and programming the new center will promote a healthy community within a walkable neighbourhood as Council has envisioned,” she said.
Meanwhile, CNV said Phase 1 of the recreation centre is now underway at Lonsdale and East 21st Street.
City staff are negotiating with Darwin Properties lease terms for the remaining sites.
The intent is to enter into leases for remaining city-owned sites by the end of this year, with revenues from the leases financing the construction of the new HJCRC.
Last month, City of North Vancouver issued development permits to both Darwin Properties and Sunrise Senior Living for Phase 1 of the Harry Jerome Neighbourhood Lands redevelopment.

A. (Tony) Caldwell says
Don’t Do It City; ……Don’t build super-densified housing and Hi-rises on “Our”, as in owned by the people of the community – Parks and Recreation land (Harry Jerome Rec Centre site 21st to 23rd, Lonsdale to St. Georges. Two towers – 26 and 30 stories, three or four mid-rise buildings, over 800 living units, near 2000 people.
Don’t put the new Rec Centre on the north side of 23rd on Norseman Field – A “parks use only” dedicated site, concrete is no replacement for grass, track and field.
Don’t, not only block, but malign the view of those in central Lonsdale on up the hill into The District.
Don’t overload the already maxed-out intersection of 23rd and Lonsdale and adjoining streets network.
Don’t bend, twist and distort the law regarding disposal of municipal assets thru use of “long-term leases”, avoiding scrutiny of full sale while delivering less value.
Don’t spend $200-$300 million tax payer dollars over-building an edifice to yesterday’s politicians when $80 or $90 million should do.
Don’t activate the distorted O.C.P. by building Over-height’s and Hi-rises, north of 17th – Lonsdale corridor, formally capped at 6 stories, quietly changed by the team at the hall in 2014.
Don’t continue to ignore the outcry of the people, the petition with over 1000 names opposed.
Don’t destroy what is left of livability within the heart of North Vancouver.
Don’t do it City, you are wrong!
