New Harry Jerome Recreation Centre to open July 25

The City of North Vancouver has set July 25 as the opening day for both the new Harry Jerome Community Recreation Centre and the Silver Harbour Seniors’ Activity Centre, with a day of public celebrations planned across both facilities.

Mayor Linda Buchanan announced the date, framing it as the culmination of more than two decades of planning. “I am incredibly proud that after more than 20 years of planning, engagement and determination, this transformative milestone is finally here,” Buchanan said. “Harry Jerome lived by the motto, ‘Never give up.’ That spirit is woven into this project — and into the future we are building together.”

The day will open with welcome remarks from Buchanan and council members, followed by programming activated throughout the centre by the City and the North Vancouver Recreation and Culture Commission. Food carts, live music, performers, games and crafts will be set up across the Harry Jerome facility.

An Early Years room will offer an indoor playground for young children, while the multi-use arena will host sport demonstrations and carnival games. Multipurpose spaces will feature Bollywood and line dancing, and visitors can sample healthy snacks and explore new appliances in the community kitchen. A low-sensory quiet space will also be available.

Fitness instructors will offer preview demonstrations of yoga, Pilates, spin and TRX classes. Creative activities including airbrush tattoos, painting, bead bracelet making and group weaving will round out the day’s programming.

Silver Harbour Seniors’ Activity Centre

The new Silver Harbour Seniors’ Activity Centre will also open July 25, replacing a 1973 building with a larger, more accessible facility for adults 55 and over. Developed by the City in partnership with Silver Harbour, the new centre expands on its predecessor’s legacy — which included more than 70 programs and services ranging from woodworking and pottery to choir and fitness — with larger and more flexible program areas, a fully equipped kitchen for meal services, wider hallways, larger elevators and more accessible washrooms. The facility is located next to the new Harry Jerome Community Recreation Centre.

Harry Jerome Community Recreation Centre

The new Harry Jerome Community Recreation Centre features an NHL-sized arena for ice hockey, para ice hockey, skating and lacrosse, along with a 25-metre pool, steam room, sauna, and both family and adult hot pools. The facility also includes indoor and outdoor fitness and training spaces, a full-sized gymnasium with an Olympic-standard court, multipurpose rooms, a preschool, dedicated youth and arts spaces, a community kitchen, an inner courtyard and a welcome atrium.

The centre will be operated and programmed by the North Vancouver Recreation and Culture Commission.
