The BC RCMP says it will not conduct random checks of vehicles or persons, but enforcement will occur at the designated road check locations on Highways 1, 3, 5, and Highway 99.
The road checks will be set up near the boundaries between VCH and Fraser Health Regions as well as Northern and Interior Health Regions.
When a road check is active, police will issue a notification on its website and the social media channels.
BC RCMP is currently in the process of determining where checks will be conducted to ensure public and officer safety.
Signs will also be placed well ahead of the road checks warning travellers and provide them the opportunity to safely turn around if the purpose of their travel in not essential.
“The emphasis will be on informing travellers of the order, identifying whether or not the purpose for travel is essential as listed in the order, and providing every opportunity for travellers to turn around voluntarily,” says Chief Superintendent Dave Attfield of BC RCMP.
The checks will be conducted by a dedicated team and will not reduce police service in the communities which we service, he added.
“We recognize that these checks will impact traffic flow and could potentially lead to delays. Leading up to the May long weekend we encourage everyone to revisit their plans and limit travel outside of their community,”
