West Van Police Department is asking for the public’s assistance with an investigation involving a thief who appears to be targeting seniors. Investigators have identified a person of interest, and the investigation is ongoing.
The first incident took place on August 20 at approximately 1:30 pm. A 94-year-old female victim was approached by a man while in a common hallway of her apartment building in the 1300 blk of Clyde Ave. The man engaged her in conversation and when the victim was distracted, he managed to steal her wallet.
The second incident took place on August 20 at approximately 3:30 pm in the same apartment building. An 84-year-old female victim was approached by a man who convinced her to let him into her apartment. Once inside the apartment, the man was able to steal the victim’s wallet.
The third incident took place on August 20 at approximately 4:45 pm in the 500 blk of Water’s Edge Cres. A resident noticed a suspicious man inside the building who was attempting to talk to residents. The man left the area after being confronted.
After contacting their respective banks, the victims discovered that their stolen debit and credit cards had been used in multiple fraudulent transactions. The total financial loss has yet to be determined.
