Kristopher Kamienik, the man responsible for defacing a Pride flag and causing damage to a flagpole at Lonsdale Quay in North Vancouver last year, was handed a two-year probationary sentence.

The sentencing occurred in North Vancouver provincial court on Wednesday, where Kamienik faced two counts of mischief.  The charges stem from an incident on May 25, 2023, when Kamienik allegedly stole and vandalized a pride flag, resulting in damage to the flagpole. North Vancouver RCMP started investigating after a video showed Kamienik’s purported actions circulated on social media.

Kamienik faced accusations of one count of mischief and theft under $5,000, though the later charge was stayed.  Following a report to Crown Counsel and a thorough investigation, Kamienik was arrested in June last year and charged by BC prosecution service with theft and mischief under $5,000.

“We have absolutely no tolerance for behaviour that seeks to marginalize, belittle, or intimidate members of our LGBTQ2S+ community, and we will do everything we can to investigate hate crimes and hate-motivated incidents to see those responsible held to account,” Constable Mansoor Sahak of North Vancouver RCMP said at that time. “We would like to thank those that came forward to provide statements and for the community for their patience as police investigated this incident.”
