A 30-year-old man has been convicted in connection with an aggravated assault against a Vancouver police officer in the Downtown Eastside on March 4, 2025, according to the news release by the Vancouver Police.

According to the news release, the officer and his partner were on foot patrol near Main and Hastings when the incident occurred. The suspect approached the officers from behind and slashed one of them on the back of the leg with a knife before running from the scene. He was arrested one block away.

The court’s decision was delivered on August 12, 2026.

“This conviction recognizes the dangers police officers face every day while working to keep Vancouver safe and hold offenders accountable,” said Constable Megan Lui. “Most importantly, it brings justice for the officer who was injured in this assault.”

Solaris Onatta Running Dey, 30, was convicted of aggravated assault of a police officer and assaulting a peace officer with a weapon, according to the news release.

“Thank you to the investigators, witnesses, and Crown counsel,” Lui said. “Their combined efforts contributed to the successful prosecution of this case.”
