Man killed in shooting in Burnaby

staff report
January 24, 2024 7:29am

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) has been dispatched to Burnaby following a shooting incident that claimed the life of one man.

On January 23, 2024, at approximately 10:30 p.m., frontline officers from the Burnaby Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) responded to multiple reports of gunfire in the 5500 block of Kingsway, near Denbigh Avenue. Upon arrival, the officers discovered a man with severe gunshot wounds.

Despite the immediate efforts of police and first responders to administer life-saving measures, the victim succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene shortly thereafter. Police have secured the area, and a continued police presence will be maintained as the investigation unfolds.

Preliminary findings suggest that the shooting was targeted, and there is currently no perceived threat to public safety arising from this incident. IHIT has been informed and has assumed control of the investigation. Meanwhile, investigators are appealing to the public for assistance and seeking witnesses or individuals with dash-cam footage near Kingsway and Denbigh Avenue on January 23, 2024, between 9 pm and 11 p.m.

Anyone possessing relevant information is urged to contact the IHIT Information Line at 1-877-557-IHIT (4448) or via email at ihitinfo@rcmp-grc.gc.ca. Cooperation from the community is crucial in aiding the ongoing investigation.
