A 43-year-old man has been sentenced to three years in custody after pleading guilty to indignity to human remains in connection with a 2023 Downtown Eastside homicide investigation.
According to the news release by VPD, the investigation began Jan. 3, 2023, after Vancouver Fire Rescue Services responded to a suspicious outdoor fire near Powell Street and Raymur Avenue. Human remains were discovered and later identified as those of 34-year-old Jeff Jeanty, 34.
Dustin Gastl was sentenced Aug. 10, 2026, to three years in custody. The sentence will be served consecutively to an unrelated sentence he is currently serving. Gastl pleaded guilty to indignity to human remains in connection with the investigation.
