Mexican restaurant in North Van closes due to rent increase

Staff report
March 31, 2022 7:35am

Red Burrito, a popular Mexican eatery on Lonsdale Avenue, has closed down due to a 15 per cent rent increase.

“It’s with great sadness that we have to announce the permanent closure of our store at 1455 Lonsdale Ave,” Red Burrito said.

“With all of our cost rising, as a small business who struggled a lot in the last two years, it was the reasonable choice for us not to renew our lease with more than 15% increase,” the restaurant said.

The restaurant had been operating on Lonsdale Ave for the past 16 years.

“We have enjoyed serving the great community of North Vancouver. A truly incredible journey since we opened in 2006. We hope to be back in the future but in a smaller format,” the restaurant said.

Although the Lonsdale Avenue location is closing down, Red Burrito is opening up in a new location at 1170 Alberni Street in Downtown Vancouver.

In truth, it is the actions of the City of North Van, in pursuit of ever greater density that has lead to unrealistic rent and lease increase’s. Rezoning and up-zoning rule the land. Small business people and all that they offer to the community matter not. More condo boxes followed by more condo boxes. It is a ship of fools and we are all set to drown!

So all over the City of North Vancouver dozens of small businesses that managed to survive covid are going to be thrown out on the street because of the actions of the politicians who elected them are stabbing them in the back. The City are also totally destroying our environment with their continual ugly cement boxes creating a denser population (with more garbage, reducing our water supply, etc) and traffic pollution.
They are NOT creating a community, they are creating a place which is not going to be very livable for long
