Missing hiker found dead

North Shore Rescue located her in a steep drainage area on the east side of the Howe Crest Trail
Staff report
January 15, 2021 5:10pm

A 21-year-old woman who had gone missing in the St. Marks Summit area was found dead.

The woman was reported missing on January 14, and the search was handed over to Squamish RCMP, who was helped by Lions Bay and North Search Rescue.

The search resumed this morning with a large number of Search and Rescue personnel from the Lower Mainland.

At approximately 10:40 am, North Shore Rescue located her in a steep drainage area on the east side of the Howe Crest Trail below St Marks Summit where she was then transported back to their base.

Unfortunately, the 21-year-old woman from Ontario was declared dead by medical crews.

Squamish RCMP will work with the BC Coroners Service on the current investigation to determine all the facts surrounding the death.

If you have any information you feel would be relevant please contact the Squamish RCMP at 604-892-6100.

“First our thoughts are with the woman’s family and friends, as well with all the responders and search teams to the St Marks area last night and today,” said Sergeant Sascha Banks.

“We have seen far too much tragedy already in the Sea to Sky Corridor this year.  Please know this: if you are in the backcountry and need help call 911, ourselves and our very experienced search teams will do everything we can to find you,” she said.
