MLA Sturdy calls for collaboration for affordability

May 12, 2022 10:32am

West Vancouver-Sea to Sky MLA Jordan Sturdy has spoken recently to the need for greater collaboration in addressing B.C.’s affordability crisis.

For years, Sturdy has advocated on behalf of British Columbians who have experienced tremendous rent increases on Crown land. Despite asking for action from the Ministry of Forests, tenants on Crown land have experienced rent increases up to 300 percent. In response to the government’s inaction, Sturdy introduced the Crown Land Residential Lease Act for the second time in March.

Sturdy pointed to the government’s ministerial mandate letters which direct ministers to “reach out to elected members from all parties as [they] deliver on [their] mandate.” Despite clear guidance that ministers should work collaboratively across party lines, the NDP government continues to ignore solutions that could help British Columbians.

Putting British Columbians first means putting aside party politics and championing good ideas, regardless of where they came from. Sturdy called upon the government to bring his and other private member’s bills up for debate so our elected representatives can have a fair and open discussion on how to best support British Columbians.
