Mobility lane, new seating at Chesterfield and Esplanade

Staff report
September 19, 2022 6:22am

CNV crews continue to work on the Esplanade Project, adding a new seating area and completing mobility lanes on Esplanade

In an update, CNV said all sidewalks are complete from Forbes to Rogers on both sides of the street and a new seating area is taking shape at Chesterfield and Esplanade.

Substantial completion is expected in late 2022, though there have been delay as concrete is in short supply throughout the Metro Vancouver, CNV says. In a staff report to council this week, the staff noted that significant progress was  made to pave the remaining gravel segments on Esplanade between Semisch and Rogers on the north side.

The mobility lane is now complete in this section and crews will begin adding landscaping and irrigation elements. Staff are also working with Coast Mountain Bus Company at Pattison to get the stop operational as soon as possible. Civil works also continue along the south side of the Lonsdale to St. Georges block including removals, soil cell and structural soil installations, and irrigation connections.

Crews are also retrofitting the mobility lane curbs in against the existing curb along the south side between Lonsdale and St Georges. Retrofitting, where possible, provides additional benefits of retaining embodied carbon in the concrete.

CNV says it is redesigning Esplanade to create a safer, more comfortable experience for pedestrians and cyclists, while maintaining sufficient road capacity for transit, trucks and passenger vehicles.
