A new 12-storey hotel is being proposed on Capilano Road in North Vancouver.
Chard Development Ltd has applied to develop the site at 1634-1748 Capilano Road for a 12-storey hotel building with 140 hotel rooms.
Also proposed is a mixed-use development that will provide 275 homes.
The site is just north of the intersection of Capilano Road and Marine Drive bordered by Capilano and McGuire Avenue and is part of the District of North Vancouver’s Lower Capilano – Marine Village Centre.
The site presently has two aging hotels.
The hotel is part of a mixed-use development that will have four rental townhomes, approximately 3,500 square feet of commercial space, and 139 parking spaces in two levels of underground parking.
Also proposed is a 24-storey mixed-use building with a nine-storey podium, containing 177 owned apartments, 72 market rental apartments, 20 rent-to-own apartments, six non-market rental apartments, and approximately 9,735 square feet of commercial space.
There will be 240 parking spaces in three levels of underground parking.
The developer is also proposing a child care and a restaurant with patio seating. Over 100 trees will be planted by the proponent in the area.
According to the proponent, the mixed-use project will increase annual GDP by $19,430,000, and create 3,795 jobs during construction with various trades and consultants.
The applicant is hosting an early public input meeting.
Between November 15 and November 29, locals can ask the applicant questions and share thoughts about the proposal.

Finally Vancouver is catching up with time! I however hope these homes will be affordable to many of us.
Louise Nagle says
In my view we have far exceeded our development on the North Shore.
To even contemplate putting a 12 story hotel at the foot of Capilano Road is appalling!
It should be evident that Capilano Rd with its tourist attractions of Grouse Mountain, suspension bridge
and fish hatchery and daily residents commuting problems with traffic can only serve to make the already
impossible travel route that much worse.
Nick says
I totally agree with Louise, the traffic is horrendous during peak times and the new builds at the Capilano road and Marine drive will bring gridlock to that area. Anyone thinking of moving to that area should think of the quality of life, this will bring.

If the lack of judgement and common sense are lost, we can expect nothing but troubles!

I agree with the previous writer. The North Shore has been putting the horse before for cart for so long now that transportation improvements cannot possibly catch up in a reasonable lifetime. North Van is overbuilt while West Van is just getting started. Why? Please don’t use the “affordable housing” excuse as it is worn out. There is no such thing as “affordable housing”. If there is some out there, it will be torn down to make way for some persons idea of affordable housing. Ridiculous!
A. Caldwell says
Stop the rezoning and densification of North Van’s existing three story rentals, and one might preserve what is left of affordable housing. As for traffic /destroyed views/the environment/neighborhood livability/promises broken/over densification/O.C.P. sold to the developer, there are over 800 living units and 26/30 story towers to be built on our Rec Centre lands at 23rd and Lonsdale – all contrary to what the locals want and what makes sense. That’s right, the City has sold off parks and rec land so they can bring this joy to all of us – despicable.

I completely agree w
Doug Oneill says
With the original plans there was a plan for a 50m pool, curling rink and HJ rec center would not be closed during construction. None of this is happening but the towers are still being built on park land. This whole redevelop is so short sighted. The very same thing is going to happen that has happened with schools which were sold off 10/15 years ago. Now we need schools. In a couple years where is the soccer field the tennis courts that central Lonsdale needs???
Deb Peterson says
Boo hiss – hard no to this. Stop the overdevelopment of our geographically unique north shore communities. Enough already. How many of the 3795 workers to be employed will be travelling to work from off of the north shore? I already beat the cars often when walking the spirit trail from Lonsdale to Park and Tilford after work some days. Ugh. Enough already. After a near lifetime here, I’m feeling like I’ve gotta pull up stakes and get over to the island before they put up a “full” sign.
