The new six-storey Paul Myers Tower at Lions Gate Hospital, featuring 108 private patient rooms and eight state-of-the-art operating rooms, is set to open on March 9, 2025. The modern acute-care facility is expected to improve health services for residents of the North Shore and surrounding communities.
The tower, named after local philanthropist and businessperson Paul Myers, includes a medical device reprocessing department, a pre-operative and post-operative care area, anesthesia intervention rooms, and isolation spaces. Each private patient room is equipped with an ensuite washroom, enhancing patient comfort and privacy.
Vancouver Coastal Health worked in collaboration with Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation) and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh Nation) to incorporate culturally appropriate and welcoming spaces for Indigenous patients and families. The facility includes a House of Elders office and a sacred space, designed to support Indigenous healing practices.
“It’s terrific news for people living on the North Shore and area that the new patient care tower at Lions Gate Hospital is opening to meet the needs, comfort and well-being of people receiving care,” said Josie Osborne, Minister of Health. “By investing in state-of-the-art facilities around B.C., including the new Paul Myers Tower, we are truly investing in better health outcomes for British Columbians. This is part of our commitment to strengthen B.C.’s public healthcare system.”
The $325-million project, which broke ground in fall 2021, was jointly funded by the Province of British Columbia, Vancouver Coastal Health, and the Lions Gate Hospital Foundation. Myers contributed $25 million toward the foundation’s $100-million campaign. It is designed to support patient- and family-centred care with lounges, a rooftop garden with a walking path, additional bike storage, and upgraded nurse call systems. Cutting-edge technology, including Vocera and Masimo systems, will enhance patient safety and streamline communication for medical staff.
“The clinical spaces are larger and designed for flexibility and efficiency to accommodate our teams better,” said Jillian Morland, clinical nurse educator at Lions Gate Hospital. “The technology upgrades will enable us to deliver the highest quality care possible.”
Lions Gate Hospital will now have 329 beds and 10 operating rooms.
