A North Vancouver father received a $109 ticket after allowing his 12-year-old son to ride an electric kick scooter on a public road.

According to the news release by the BC RCMP, a BC Highway Patrol officer spotted the boy riding a small E-Scooter in heavy traffic on Marine Drive at Pemberton Avenue on Aug. 4 at about 7:15 p.m.

The officer stopped the rider after suspecting he was underage and learned that he was 12 years old. The boy was wearing shorts, a T-shirt, an oversized helmet, and large shoes, according to the news release.

“Children under 16 are not allowed to operate E Scooters on public roads, bike lanes, or bike paths,” said Sergeant Michael McLaughlin of BC Highway Patrol.

According to the news release, officers spoke with the boy’s father, explained the law and issued him a ticket for allowing a person under 16 to operate an electric kick scooter. The offence falls under Section 7(2) of the Electronic Kick Scooter Pilot Project Regulation and carries a $109 fine.

“Police are getting an increasing number of complaints about unsafe and illegal E mobility users,” McLaughlin said.

According to the news release, McLaughlin said the main goal is to prevent death and injury and that police may need to issue more tickets before people understand the rules.

Absolutely and the fines should be far more than $109 at least double safety for everyone for walking on sideways as well

    Zero enforcement in Vancouver.
