A new recreation centre will be opening late this fall in North Vancouver.

The new Lions Gate Community Recreation Centre remains “on track” for a fall 2021 opening, although services will be offered in Spring of 2022.

The new community recreation centre is located at 1733 Lions Gate Lane in the heart of the new Lions Gate Village.

It is located in the new LARCO residential development that is being built just west of Capilano Road, between Curling Road and Fullerton Avenue.

The new centre features a full-sized gymnasium with basketball, volleyball, badminton, and pickleball. It will also have an express library operated by North Vancouver District Public Libraries.

It will also include community spaces, a meeting room and a room with comfortable seating areas, and a kitchen for gatherings, classes, and group lunches.

Office space for community service groups, such as Capilano Community Services Society, will also be included as well as a district-owned public plaza with play spaces and outdoor seating.

The front doors of the centre will face out to a new pedestrian-friendly street and outdoor public plaza, which is being built between the north and south buildings of the new residential development.

The public plaza will host programs and events, and will have areas for people to sit, to gather, and to connect with friends and neighbours.

With Harry Jerome Recreation Centre closing in December, City of North Vancouver will also move some of its programs to the new recreation centre.

Except once again all the kids who swim get screwed. Who not have a multi pool complex including a wave pool, full competition swimming pool, AND actual wet and dry saunas? Why always focus on the same things that exist in EVERY OTHER POOL in the area?

North Van residents are seeing one pill destroyed and nothing replaced. Putting in a half azzed partial pool to make a claim you did it is laughable to those who want actual dining facilities

Out of this story I think we should recognize a most distinct difference in recreation facilities, budgeting and corporate management wherein the two North Van’s – ‘City’ and the ‘District’ are on completely different paths. It would appear that the development and renewal business plan at the District includes expansion and new offerings of rec. and community centre’s (not to mention the plethora of natural green belts and parks space). Whereas at the City, their planning, budgeting and financial practices are so poor and disconnected from a house in order that they find it necessary to sell/cash-in, the long ago paid for lands that their oft described ‘Premier’ community centre – Harry Jerome Rec. Centre- sits on, thereby reducing public facilities rather than expanding to match population growth.

Not only are 30 story hi-rises set to replace – OUR – parks and rec. land (21st to 23rd), but the new ‘H.J. Rec. Centre’ is to be built across the street upon – that is to replace with concrete – the much used and vitally neighborhood important ‘Norseman Field’ track and soccer pitch.

For myself, when those elections roll around it will be the City’s planning failure and community betrayal, financial incompetence and trashed O.C.P.’s, and Hi-rises where they most definitely do not belong that will be guiding my ballot choices! – (and hopefully many others).
