North Vancouver RCMP has seized a large machete following a disruptive weekend in Lynn Valley tied to end-of-year grad celebrations.
According to a news release, officers responded to multiple reports of disorderly behaviour on June 20, including large groups of youth openly consuming alcohol at parks and school grounds, setting off fireworks, fighting, throwing beer cans, and setting fires. One report involved a group of approximately 40 youth causing a disturbance.
During that incident, a complainant was assaulted by a youth from the crowd. Officers located the suspect and attempted to arrest him, at which point a large machete was found on his person. The suspect fled before the arrest could be completed. The machete was seized, the complainant was not seriously injured, and the suspect’s identity remains unknown. The investigation is ongoing.
According to the news release, Corporal Mansoor Sahak, media relations officer for the North Vancouver RCMP, is urging parents to speak openly with their teenagers about decision-making ahead of the summer.
“Guardians play an essential role in guiding their children and helping them make informed decisions,” Sahak said. “We urge parents to have open and honest conversations with their teens about how to make good choices, and the possible outcomes and consequences of poor decisions.”
The release advises that when discussing substance use, parents should be direct and factual without overwhelming their child with information, and that setting clear expectations can help ensure a safe summer.
North Vancouver RCMP says officers will take a proactive approach to enforcing liquor, traffic, and bylaw violations throughout the summer.
