North Vancouver RCMP are reminding residents to celebrate Halloween safely and follow local fireworks regulations as trick-or-treaters prepare to hit the streets.
According to a police media release, Halloween is one of the busiest nights of the year for first responders with additional noise complaints resulting from the use of fireworks, and additional officers will be on duty over the weekend to help ensure public safety.
According to RCMP, fireworks are not permitted in the City of North Vancouver or on Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation) lands. In the District of North Vancouver, fireworks may only be purchased or sold with a valid permit. Anyone caught selling or using fireworks illegally could face fines or criminal charges.
“Let the creepy costumes and spooky decorations be the only thing that scares you this Halloween,” said Corporal Mansoor Sahak, Media Relations Officer for the North Vancouver RCMP. “Take appropriate precautions to ensure that you have a fun and safe Halloween experience.”
Residents who witness unsafe or illegal fireworks use are asked to call the RCMP’s non-emergency line.
To keep the evening safe, police recommend that children trick-or-treat in groups or with an adult, stay on well-lit streets, use marked crosswalks, carry flashlights, and wear bright or reflective costumes. Pets should be kept indoors, where they can be calm and secure from fireworks and crowds.
The RCMP also encourages residents to use the online crime reporting tool for non-urgent matters to avoid long wait times on phone lines.
