North Vancouver RCMP continue to investigate a serious boat collision that claimed the life of a child. It’s alleged that a speedboat travelling off the waters of Cates Park struck the two children on the inflatable tube, police said in a press release.
The incident occurred on June 7, 2025, at approximately 6:30 p.m., when police received multiple calls about a serious collision involving a speedboat and two children on an inflatable tube that was being towed by another vessel. One child did not survive and was pronounced dead at the scene and the other was airlifted to hospital in critical condition.
The boat operator who struck the inflatable tube is in custody. “Alcohol and speed may have been a factor in the collision, and as the investigation continues, officers will work to uncover all available evidence pointing to the cause of this collision,” said Corporal Mansoor Sahak, Media Relations Officer for the North Vancouver RCMP. “Our sincerest condolences to the child’s family and friends as they deal with this tragic loss of life. Very sad. Unfortunately, the number of people piloting boats, and driving vehicles recklessly seems to have increased. There is no reason for it other than carelessness. If alcohol turns out to be a factor here, the boat driver should be punished to the fullest extent of the law. People who drive any vehicle impaired put other people’s lives at risk. Drinking then driving is a choice..and that means these people should be charged with second degree murder in the case of a death.
