One person in hospital after crash on highway in West Vancouver

Staff report
April 10, 2024 6:42am

One person was taken to hospital after being injured in a crash on Highway 99 in West Vancouver. The incident happened on Highway 99 westbound near exit 4 in West Vancouver after a car went off the embankment, causing injuries to the driver.

“BC Emergency Health Services received a call at 4:41 p.m. on April 7 regarding a motor vehicle incident on Highway 99 westbound near exit 4. Two ambulances responded to the scene. Paramedics provided emergency medical treatment to one patient and transported them to hospital,” said paramedic public information officer Brian Twaites.

Twelve people lost their lives in accidents on the Sea to Sky Highway last year. In 2022, four people were killed in crashes on the highway. Staff Sgt. Gareth Bradley of Squamish RCMP shared these statistics with the Squamish council at a Committee of the Whole meeting on March 28.

“We had a decrease in overall collisions in 2023, although the stats reflect that we had eight more deaths due to collisions in 2023 compared to 2022, and most of these occurred on Highway,” he said.

Staff Sgt. Bradley, however, did not provide further details on how many of the 12 fatal casualties were on the highway. He said there was a big emphasis on impaired driving enforcement by police in 2023. “We conducted a significant number of impaired driving checks stops, especially on long weekends and around Christmas, resulting in a significant increase in the number of immediate roadside prohibitions,” he said.

The North Vancouver RCMP also caught an N driver for speeding at 171 km/h in an 80 km/h zone on Highway 1. This incident occurred on April Fools’ Day, prompting a cheeky warning from police to keep the ‘jokes funny, not fast.”
