Over 100 new child care spaces created in North Van

STAFF REPORT
July 28, 2020 6:33pm

More than 100 new licensed child care spaces have been created in North Vancouver.

Government of BC’s new spaces fun is supporting five projects in Vancouver and North Vancouver.

As many as 74 spaces will be created at Capilano University Children’s Centre, 24 spaces at Little Buddies Daycare, and eight spaces in Little Steps Learning Centre.

The new on-campus child care centre at Capilano University will provide 74 new licensed child care spaces, including 24 infant and toddler spaces and 50 spaces for children aged three to five years.

The inclusively designed building is expected to open in July 2023.

It will serve as both learning spaces for children and practicum learning spaces for students of Capilano University’s early childhood education programs.

Located within walking distance of two elementary schools and a public library, Little Buddies Daycare is expected to open in January 2021 and will provide 24 infant and toddler spaces.

To support the child care sector, Little Buddies will accept placements of early childhood education students from local colleges and universities, as well as co-operative education students from local high schools.

Little Steps Learning Centre, which opened in June 2020, is now providing eight infant and toddler spaces.

“These new facilities will provide quality care for local children, as well as learning and practicum opportunities for future early childhood educators,” said Bowinn Ma, MLA for North-Vancouver Lonsdale.

“Training the next generation of early childhood educators is an important part of our commitment to making child care more accessible and affordable for families.”
