Surviving Ambleside swan captured, taken to bird sanctuary

Staff report
February 19, 2021 10:54am

The surviving swan from the Ambleside pool has been captured and taken to a waterfowl sanctuary.

Initial signs indicate that it is female and in good health, and it was taken to the Whonnock Water Fowl sanctuary.

District staff will assess all the options for the swan to determine what is in her best interest, be it returning to Ambleside Pond, or finding another home.

A pair of swans have lived in Ambleside Pond for decades.

On February 18, district staff and community members were informed that one of the pair was presumed dead while the other had gone missing.

The surviving swan had left the pond on foot, apparently seeking its mate.

District staff had been working to recover the swan and ensure its continued health and safety, although those recovery efforts were hampered by the fact that the swan was in Burrard Inlet.

The District of West Vancouver keeps swans in the park under an Avicultural Permit from the Canadian Wildlife Service.

We saw the Swan yesterday in front of our place in Ambleside and were very saddened , however this morning we saw her being reduced from a boat it took them about an hour to catch up to her. A great story that looks like it will end well.. peter black
