Drivers travelling eastbound on Marine Drive should expect delays this month as construction crews work to prepare the corridor for a new rapid transit service.

According to the traffic advisory issued by West Vancouver, lane closures are in effect on eastbound Marine Drive between Pound Road and Park Royal South from May 11 to 31. The bus lane and curb lane will be closed in some sections along that stretch, though two lanes will remain open to all traffic.

Motorists should also be aware of the area’s turning restrictions. Right turns from Marine Drive onto the Mall Access Road between Main Street and Park Royal South are prohibited during the construction period. The advisory also notes that the Mall Access Road will not be accessible from the west parking lot.

The work is being carried out in support of the new R2 Marine-Willingdon RapidBus, which is set to launch in September 2026. The expanded route will extend the existing R2 Marine Drive RapidBus eastward from Phibbs Exchange to Metrotown Station via Hastings Street and Willingdon Avenue, offering all-day service between the North Shore, Vancouver, and Burnaby seven days a week.

Among the planned service improvements are all-door boarding, accessible loading areas, bus stop shelters at select locations, and features such as text-to-audio functionality and tactile pads. Larger 60-foot buses will also be introduced, increasing passenger capacity by 50 percent.
